My picture says it couldn't be checked for viruses
What the virus check on pictures does, what each message means, and what to do when an attachment stays on Checking the file… or says we couldn't check it yet.
On this page
Every file you upload is checked for viruses before anything can use it, and a picture you attach to a request is no exception. The check normally takes a second or two. This page explains what you might see when it takes longer.
Symptom
- The attachment stays on Checking the file… for a long time.
- The attachment says We couldn't check your picture for viruses yet — try again in a minute.
- The agent answered with the same sentence.
- A message says the file was flagged and removed.
What each message means
| You see | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Checking the file… | The picture is uploaded and being scanned. | Wait a moment. You can type your request in the meantime; the send button is ready as soon as the check passes. |
| We couldn't check your picture for viruses yet — try again in a minute | The scanner is busy or temporarily unavailable. Nothing was sent to the AI and no credits were used. | Remove the picture and attach it again in a minute. If it keeps happening, tell us. |
| Flagged and removed | The scanner found something it does not allow, or the file isn't really the type its name says. The file was deleted from your workspace. | Export the picture again from the original program (a PNG, JPG or WebP), or use another one. |
Good to know
- Pictures are never sent to the AI before they pass the check, even when you are in a hurry. That is on purpose.
- The check keeps retrying in the background for a few minutes, so a picture that couldn't be checked now is usually clean and usable shortly after. Attaching it again is quick.
- The same check covers files you add in Files, photos from the phone camera and photos you search with. See Account security for the rest of how files are protected.
