Workspaces, projects and sharing
How your work is organized (workspaces, projects, Things, pieces), how the trash works, and how to share a Thing with a link without giving away more than you mean to.
Everything you make lives in a simple hierarchy, and sharing is built on top of it.
Account > Workspaces > Projects > Things > PiecesThe hierarchy
| Level | What it is |
|---|---|
| Account | You. Your sign-in, security, billing and settings |
| Workspace | A home for your work. You get a personal workspace automatically. Team workspaces come with the Team plan (see Team workspaces) |
| Project | A folder of related work: Things, concept boards, drawings, renders and exports |
| Thing | What you make |
| Piece | A made or bought part inside a Thing |
Billing, credits, storage and entitlements attach to a workspace. When you work alone, that is simply your personal workspace.
Projects and files
A project keeps a design effort together. A "desk lamp" project might hold the lamp Thing, its concept board, a drawing set, a handful of renders, and the exported files you sent to your printer.
The Files panel lists all uploads and exports per project, with tags, search, and storage usage, so you always know what is taking space.
Trash and recovery
Deleted Things go to the trash and can be recovered for 30 days. On top of that, version history means that earlier states of a Thing are preserved. Together they make an accidental delete a small problem.
Sharing with a link
Open a Thing's sharing options to create a share link. Each link has a permission level:
| Permission | The person can |
|---|---|
| View | Open the Thing, orbit, explode and measure it (it opens as a flat, orthographic view; View → Switch to perspective changes that for you only) |
| Comment | View, and leave comments |
| Edit | View and make changes |
| Remix | View, and make their own copy in their own workspace |
Which levels you can create depends on your plan:
| Plan | Link types |
|---|---|
| Free trial | Everything, like Pro: view, comment and edit links |
| Free, Maker | View and comment links |
| Pro | + Edit links |
| Team, Enterprise | + Real-time multiplayer for workspace members |
Each link can also have an expiry date and a password.
Who sees what
- A link works for whoever has it, up to its permission. Treat it like a key.
- A private Thing stays private apart from the links you create.
- A public Thing is visible to everyone. See Private and public Things.
- Watermark options are available for shared renders and drawings, to protect your work.
Working together: On Team and Enterprise, workspace members who open the same Thing see each other live (avatars, 3D cursors, selections, follow) and edit it together: see Working together in real time. For feedback, use 3D comments with @mentions and review requests: see 3D comments, mentions and notifications and Review requests: check an alternative before you use it.
The mobile viewer
On a phone or tablet, Solid Vibes is a viewer. You can open a Thing, orbit, explode, measure, comment and share. Editing happens in a desktop browser. This makes it easy to show something to a colleague from your pocket.
Roles (for team workspaces)
In a team workspace every member has one of five roles:
| Role | Can |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything, including billing and deleting the workspace |
| Admin | Manage members, roles and settings |
| Editor | Create and edit projects, save versions and use alternatives |
| Reviewer | Comment and approve review requests |
| Viewer | View and export, if allowed |
See Team workspaces and Roles and permissions.
Good habits
- Use projects to group related Things, so sharing and file management are easy.
- Name Things clearly ("lamp_arm_v3", not "test2").
- Share with the lowest permission that works. View, not edit.
- Set an expiry on links that are not meant to last.
- Check visibility before you share, as described in Private and public Things.
- Revoke links you no longer need.
- Release a version before you share a final design, so you can reproduce it. (A version is also saved for you when you create a share link, if anything changed.)
Try it
Open one of your Things, create a view link with a 7-day expiry, and open it in a private browser window to see exactly what the recipient will see.
